Waste to Taste – Free Food Boxes

NEW LOCATION AS OF SEPTEMBER 26TH, 2022!

1775 W 6th Avenue, Eugene, OR 97402

Waste to Taste is a food rescue and free food box program through Burrito Brigade. We work in collaboration with local grocery stores, bakeries, restaurants, and farms to rescue food and redistribute it to the community. Proof of income or hardship is not required to shop here.

We believe food is a human right.

COVID-19 & COLD/FLU SEASON

As of May 2023, masks are now optional! However, we do ask that you please keep the health and safety of other shoppers, our volunteers, and our staff in mind. A lot of folks we work with are at higher risk of illness and complications. So, we ask you to please stay home if you’re feeling under the weather, and consider wearing a mask while you’re here if you’re still experiencing symptoms.

Thank you for being thoughtful and considerate of our wonderful community!

WHERE TO SHOP

NEW LOCATION AS OF 9/26/22: 1775 W 6th Avenue Eugene, OR 97402. Enter through the front door facing 6th Avenue.

WHEN TO SHOP

Monday – Friday, at your scheduled appointment time. (See the Calendly app below to schedule an in-person appointment!)

Appointments are available during the following days and times:

      • Mondays, 3:45 pm – 6:00 pm
      • Tuesdays – Thursdays, 4:00 pm – 5:45 pm
      • Fridays, 3:00 – 5:00 pm

HOW TO SHOP

Shoppers are encouraged to bring clean, reusable grocery bags or totes. Paper grocery bags are available in the entryway, as well. When you enter the building (through the front door facing 6th Avenue), Waste to Taste is through the first door on your left. Check in at the front table, which is usually staffed by one of our wonderful volunteers. Make your way through the rows of food, selecting items that suit you and your family’s needs. Please note: Some food items are limited to a certain number per household per week, due to limited availability.

WHEN TO SCHEDULE

The weekly schedule is posted every Sunday evening at 6:00 pm on this webpage for the upcoming week. Appointments are not available more than one week in advance. Currently, we are not able to offer recurring appointments, so check back each week to schedule as needed. Please note: To serve as many community members as possible, appointments are limited to one appointment per household per week.

HOW TO SCHEDULE

Please fill out the Calendly form at the bottom of this page to schedule an in-person shopping appointment. (Note: When the schedule fills up for the current week, you will not be able to make an appointment. The Calendly form will read ‘No times for current month.’)

Need a food box delivery, instead of in-person shopping appointment? Please read the notes below, under ACCESSIBILITY, and DELIVERIES AND URGENT REQUESTS.

UPDATE 3/16/23: We’ve added a waitlist feature for our in-person shopping appointments! If the Calendly schedule (below) is full for the week, please fill out this form to be added to the waitlist. If you were able to schedule an appointment using the Calendly app below, there is no need to add yourself to the waitlist.

Check back each Sunday evening for new appointment times, and to add yourself to the waitlist, if needed.

PARKING

We share a parking lot with The Houndstooth Public House. Please come as close to your appointment time as possible, preferably within 10 minutes of your appointment. Coming too early or too late impacts fellow shoppers. There is parking in the lot, as well as some street parking off 6th Ave, on Grant Street.

ACCESSIBILITY

Our parking lot and building are at street level. There are some parking spots directly adjacent to the building. Waste to Taste does not currently have a designated handicap parking space, though there is one in front of The Houndstooth Public House. If you have mobility/transportation/accessibility concerns, please email waste2taste@burritobrigade.org to inquire about our free box delivery program.

DELIVERIES AND URGENT REQUESTS

Need food urgently? Waste to Taste can accommodate a limited number of emergency food box deliveries per week. What qualifies as “urgent” or “emergency”? It’s hard to say. Everyone has different needs. Here are some general guidelines that can help you decide. If one or more of these apply, you may want to request an urgent delivery.

  • You have not received a food box from Waste to Taste within the last seven (7) days.
  • You have not had access to food in 24 hours or more.
  • You do not have transportation to Waste to Taste.
  • You are disabled or otherwise unable to travel to Waste to Taste.
  • You are pregnant or nursing.
  • You are the parent or guardian of young children, or children who do not have access to school lunch programs, etc.
  • You are elderly or caring for elderly persons.
  • You have a medical condition which requires you to eat regularly to maintain blood sugar, take life-saving medication with food, etc.

Note: Waste to Taste can only provide one urgent/emergency box/delivery per household, per week. Filling out the request form for an urgent/emergency delivery does not guarantee that you may receive an urgent/emergency delivery. Our resources are limited and we do our best to support as many families as we can. As of April 1, 2023, our deliveries are powered exclusively by our wonderful crew of dedicated volunteers. While Waste to Taste received a temporary grant that allowed us to utilize free deliveries through DoorDash for about a year, that program ended at the end of March 2023. Thank you for understanding and being patient. We’re all in this together!

We use an honor system at Waste to Taste. Please be mindful that we are trying to help as many community members as we can, and our resources are limited. There are additional resources around the community that may be able to help you in the meantime if you are unable to receive a box from us this week:
